We have land!
It’s project kick-off!… In the loosest sense.
We have land, big dreams, but minimal plans. Nearly five acres of flat land and brush in Spring Hope, NC. Surrounded by a decent tree line, this property seems like the perfect opportunity to start a homestead. All we have to do is clear the brush and we’re good to go!
Arriving to the property, it didn’t seem like that bad of a job. The land is at least flat. How bad could it be to clear five acres?
We used a walk-behind bush hog, or a hyper-powered lawnmower, to clear a majority of the land and make spaces for the shed and home to be built. It was a full days work from morning to evening to complete. While it was fun at first, the excitement quickly wore off after a few hours of wrestling the machine, avoiding rolling ankles, and constantly being rained on by seeds and debris.
The five acres looks and feels so much bigger after clearing! After the work was done, I spent a few minutes imagining what it will look like with buildings, and crossed my fingers hoping things don’t grow back too quickly.
